Eternity in Invisible Limbo (2023)
Mixed-media collage on canvas.
Historically, fairies were often feared as powerful and potentially dangerous entities that possessed no souls. There is no concrete definition of what a fairy is. However, theories include demoted deities that are stuck in between heaven and hell, demons (a Catholic fueled theory), and hidden people or a prehistoric race. Meraki the Phoenix wanted to really hone in on the idea that fairies are a part of an in-between. She used a variety of different elements including watercolor, acrylic, and pages from a book to create this piece. The fairy’s white dress, which represents an angelic trait, juxtaposes her facial features and complexion, which are meant to be more odd and eerie with her violet contouring and blackened irises. Staying within an earthy color pallet, the fairy sits in an earth portal as her environment with the word “Eternal” encompassing a notion that fairies are immortal yet forced and also chosen to be hidden for reasons of ostracization and survival.
